Elder and Hospice Care ~ This 20 hour workshop deals with an extremely rewarding group of clients: the elderly and those facing the end of life. As America's population ages, the needs of the elderly are often unmet by the medical community. Such frequent complaints as joint stiffness, constipation, and difficulty sleeping are considered normal effects of aging. These and other discomforts of growing older are often easily alleviated by massage. The amount of touch this population receives is hugely inadequate, and the touch that is received is often task-based, rather than given with a caring intention. Those who are experiencing the final stages of life, and their loved ones, benefit greatly from gentle massage and energy techniques that can alleviate suffering and ease the individual's passage from this world. Indications and contraindications for massage are detailed along with techniques for each part of the body that can be adapted to a nursing home, hospital or hospice setting. Tips for working safely in these alternative settings are also explored. This workshop is taught by Virginia Tingley, RN, CMT, and Co-Director of our school, who has extensive experience with and enthusiasm for working with the elderly and those ending their journey in this lifetime. Summer, 2007 date To Be Announced Cost: $350
